Week 5

During this week I looked more into the design of the hunter character who I named “Xzavia the hunter” and made some concept art of what i imagine him to look like based on describing the character using words exercise I completed in weeks prior.

Hunter concepts explained

I made these concepts to help illustrate my idea for the character to the team as well as to give me an understanding of this character so that when I make the model I have a visual representation to reference instead of just going off ideas revolving around inside my head. The top left image is what I imagine the model/miniature for the hunter to look like. To make this I took inspiration from a quiet character I mocked up in hero forge who was holding a bow and then I traced round that model and added the clothes to get that design.

3D printing lecture/talk  (Avenue campus)

Unfortunately prior to this project i had no knowledge of how 3D printers worked and how to use one and the information needed surrounding their use so when i saw that there was a 3D printing lecture happening on main University of Southampton campus i jumped in the car and went straight there and found out the following information:

  • How to use Cura (3D print software)

  • How to save a blender file and get it ready fro 3D printing

  • The smaller the object the less detail and the more brittle it will be

  • Multiple different printing materials can be used and are available to book at the digital humanities area on avenue campus

This lecture provided me with some basic info as well as examples of previously printed work that can help me and my group leader to decide if we have time to make medium size models for the game or even miniatures and if we want to run the risk of losing key details that help distinguish the characters.

The verdict after chatting was that 3D printing doesn't really suit these miniatures as per my research we could get more detail from hand made polymer clay models whereas the printed miniatures would be very dull all one colour and/or printing materials mixed together and be hard to distinguish. Wax model workshop

Also this week the uni was holding a wax workshop that i attended where we made models out of hot wax and used this to see how the hunter model could potentially turn out.

From this workshop i worked out choosing polymer clay was a good idea but was also shown that the bow looks kinda off when it doesn't have a string (which is what i originally intended to do) that and the bow is not in great proportion which i will take into consideration when making the hunter using the clay and paint.
