Game Name Ideas

This page shows the different names ideas that I had for my game and what I decided on and why I did as well as the process to creating a logo that portrays the game and informs viewers of the name.

In order to come up with a name for my game based on anxiety I looked at my notes from speaking to people and videos of people online all saying that they always hear the same remarks from people in regards to their anxiety, these remarks include words like "nerves", "nervous", "Stressed", "Tired" etc.

I used those remarks as well as some synonyms for anxiety to come up with the following title ideas:

"Nerves" - I like this title as many people who suffer from anxiety are most commonly told they are nervous when talking to people who are not therapists about their feelings and this title would work well in my setting of a time before anxiety was recognised as being told your just nervous when anxious would have been way more common in a world that doesn't recognise the mental health disorder your suffering from.

"PANIC!" - This name portrays danger so may be bad but also panic is a synonym of anxiety so may be good to portray the experiences without directly saying, the capitals and exclamation mark may also draw attention to the title and future logo.

"Stress"- This is another thing that people with anxiety get told they have when they talk to someone about the way they feel so may fit perfectly in a time before anxiety was recognised. However, this title seems kind of basic and dull and may not attract much attention.

"Mentally I'll" - This is a very intriguing title for a game about a mental health condition however, this title could be seen as offensive

These are a couple of example of the name ideas that I came up with and after considering the points that I have raised about each of the titles I have decided to go for "Nerves" as this is the most common thing that anxious people are told when they talk about their feelings and its kind of mysterious and draws you in.

Logo Designing

first logo concepts.jpg

In order top design the logo I started by just drawing what randomly came to mind in relation to the name ideas I hade above which led to these designs being drawn. After drawing these initial designs is when I decided on the title of "Nerves" - A Story Of Anxiety because io believed at this stage that the yellow nerve ending design making the wording nerve looked really cool and attracted the players attention and I also chose this name for the reasons labels above.

I then look into words that related to my game so that i could research games in those genres in order to find out what sorta designs they used to help gigve me some ideas those words were:

  • Anxiety

  • Phobia

  • Nerves

  • Historical

  • Educational

  • Danger

  • Panic

  • Choices

  • Dialogue

  • Interactive

I then looked at logos for games that matched those words or used the themes of those words in their games and made an annotated mood board out of the designs.

After looking at these different games logos, I found that the most common logo type for games with genres similar to mine was a combination logo that incorporated loads of different logo types as all of the logos I looked at included some type of pictural element along with some wording.

They all also had some kind of imagery that portrayed an emotion that the game gives the players or a color/hue present that links to the game in some way that reveals itself once you play or is seen throughout promotional marketing.

All these logos appeal to their target audience because each of the logos makes the games genre very obvious because of the imagery and such present like the Phasmophobia logo, for example appeals to horror enthusiasts because of the creepy nature of the imagery used in the background and the font style that gives off creepy vibes.

My game is set just after WW1 so I want too try to portray this in the logo.

In order to make a font  that portrays the setting of WW1 i looked at war games I particularly like "VERDUN" logo style as the font looks aged and like torn paper, and the smaller info is slightly less damaged like it has been preserved.

or another possibility for design was to use symbolism that links to the wording to make up the words like how in the design on the bottom right of the image it looks liek a nervous system is making up the word "Nerves".

So after Looking and reviewing those logos from existing games I took that information forward into my logo designing phase.

The logos that are the most effective at conveying information about there game that I have looked at have the following elements :

  1. picture/imagery

  2. color (portrays emotion)

  3. unique typeface

I will be taking these elements into consideration for my designs so as you can see on the left I wanted to look at different san serif fonts to use for my logo because most of the fonts/typefaces use din the existing game logos I looked at are bold san serifs, so I decided to use a San serif font I believe the one I chose out of the few listed at the bottom of my notes page on the left was arial black and its the most bold so it would grab the audiences attention more.

My final logo design and why I chose it

The images below are the 3 logo designs that I made using the information I gathered above. The first image on the far left is heavily inspired by the Night in the woods logo that I review further up  up in this page as in that logo the shape around the wording can easily be overlooked and missed but is actually the animal characters looking at the logo which shows the mental health element of the games narrative subtlety which, is why in this logo I made it look like a huddle of people surrounding the bold san serif typeface in the middle.

The middle Design incorporates the bold san serif Arial Black font as well as the symbolism that I spoke about above that has the word "Nerves" made up by an nervous system. The final design I did is very interesting its very similar to the middle design however, in this I added color to help portray an emotion the game gives you so I research online which colors people associate with mental health and blue, red and green where the colors that were most commonly associated with mental health conditions.

However, I could not decided between the left or the right logo to be the logo to promote my game so when we did our surveys for our wants and concerns from potential players of our games I added a question that asked which logo those players like the best and to my happiness, because it was the logo I like the most out of the 16 responses i got on my questionnaire a proportion of 81.3% chose logo 1 which was the one on the left.
